A total of 49 students were admitted, and were taught by only two teachers, the Principal and one Professor. Of these 49 students, 27 got their Medical Diplomas in 1863. In 1886 the Medical School was renamed as the Lahore Medical College. In 1891, the Licentiate Diploma was re-designated as Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The first Principal after partition was Lt Col Ilahi Bukhsh. The present Principal is Prof. Mumtaz Hasan. The Principal of King Edward Medical College, Lahore is also the Chairman of Admission Board.
In 1870, the construction of the attached teaching hospital was completed and was named after the then Viceroy of India, Lord Mayo (Mayo Hospital). During 1910-1915, new buildings were constructed from King Edward Memorial Funds, and with the Sovereign permission named King Edward Medical College. There were generous donations by the rulers of various princely states of Punjab; that is why various college blocks bear the name of the donors. The major ones are:

Bahawalpur block (Pathology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine)
Farid Kot block (Anatomy)
Kapurthala block (Pharmacology)
In addition to M.B., B.S., this College also imparts teaching to B.D.S. students of de' Montmorency College of Dentistry and School of Physiotherapy, Mayo Hospital, Lahore. The teaching hospitals affiliated with this college are Mayo Hospital, Lady Willingdon Hospital and Lady Aitchison Hospital. The college is affiliated with University of the Punjab, Lahore.

2. FATIMA JINNAH MEDICAL COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, LAHORE.
Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore was established in 1948, just a year after the birth of our country, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The need for the immediate establishment of an institution to train women in the medical profession was acutely felt. The father of the nation, the late Quaid-i-Azam gave his blessings and approved the name of his sister Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah to be associated with this institution.
Fatima Jinnah Medical College admitted its first batch of 39 students in October, 1948. Since then it has been training women not only from all over Pakistan, but also from the entire Muslim world and some friendly brethren countries. Fatima Jinnah graduates are serving not only in Pakistan but also all over the world. The first Principal of this college was Prof. Shujaat Ali. The present Principal is Prof. Muhammad Akbar Chaudhry.
Teaching hospital attached to the college, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (700 beds), is now being extended on another 22 Kanals and will provide another 400 beds. The name of this new hospital is Fatima Jinnah Hospital. The college is affiliated with University of the Punjab, Lahore.

3. NISHTAR MEDICAL COLLEGE, MULTAN
This college was established by the Government of the Punjab after the creation of Pakistan. It started functioning on the first day of October, 1951. It was the third Medical College in the province of Punjab. It was named after the First Pakistani Governor of Punjab, Late Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar. Clinical teaching is imparted at the Nishtar Hospital, Multan which is situated in the college campus. Fatima Jinnah Hospital for Women and two Maternity and Child Welfare Centres in Multan City are also attached to the college for domiciliary maternity and child welfare training of students. The first Principal was Dr. Muhammad Jamal Bhutta. The present Principal is Prof. Shabbir Ahmad Nasir.
A dental section for B.D.S. Degree has been added. First batch of B.D.S. students was admitted in 1973-74 session. (Prospectus for dental students is published separately).
The Nishtar Medical College remained affiliated with the University of the Punjab, Lahore upto 1975-76, and thereafter with the Bahauddin Zakaria University, Multan, now this college is affiliated with University of Health Sciences, Lahore.

4. QUAID-E-AZAM MEDICAL COLLEGE, BAHAWALPUR
This Medical College was founded in 1970 and Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital is the affiliated teaching hospital with more than 1300 beds with modern operation theatres complex. Various postgraduate courses, i.e. DOMS, DCP, DCH, M.S. and FCPS are being held. The first Principal of this college was Prof. Alamdar Hussain. The present Principal is Prof. Maj. ® Muhammad Amin.
The Quaid-e-Azam Medical College remained affiliated with the University of the Punjab, Lahore upto 1975-76, after which it was affiliated to Islamia University Bahawalpur upto 2003 and now this College is affiliated with University of Health Sciences, Lahore.

Faisalabad is the third largest city of Pakistan, situated in the centre of the Punjab, approximately 140 Km. from the provincial capital, Lahore. Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad was established in 1973 and the admissions for the session 1973-74 were made in March, 1974. The newly constructed college campus is situated on Sargodha Road, adjacent to the University of Agriculture. It is spread over an area of 158 acres. The first Principal was Prof. M. H. Toosi. 6. RAWALPINDI MEDICAL COLLEGE, RAWALPINDI
Admissions for 1973-74 session were made in March, 1974 and teaching was started provisionally along with Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad. The college was shifted in November, 1974 to its present site at Tipu Road, Rawalpindi where all the Basic Departments had developed. The teaching hospitals affiliated to the college are Holy Family Hospital, District Headquarters Hospital, Rawalpindi General Hospital, and Fauji Foundation Medical Centre. All teaching Hospitals provide 1278 beds for the patients. A new teaching hospital (414 beds) will be operational by the end of 1999. The first Principal of this college was Prof. M.H. Toosi. The present Principal is Prof. Muhammad Musaddaq Khan. This College was affiliated to the University of the Punjab and now with the University of Health Sciences, Lahore.

7. ALLAMA IQBAL MEDICAL COLLEGE, LAHORE
This institution was established on May 2, 1975 as Lahore Medical College. To start with it was located in a portion of building of the College of Community Medicine at Birdwood Road, Lahore. This college is now housed in its new campus adjacent to the Punjab University New Campus. The teaching hospital affiliated with this College is Jinnah Hospital, which was inaugurated on February 2, 1996.. The first Principal of this college was Prof. A.H. Awan. The present Principal is Prof. Syed Sibtul Hasnain.
Today Allama Iqbal Medical Complex has a beautiful campus spread over an area of 103 acres. This College was affiliated to the University of the Punjab, Lahore and now with the University of Health Sciences, Lahore.

SIMS is the first-ever Self-Financed merit based Medical College established by the Punjab Government. Its classes were started on 21st April, 2003. The first year class of Sialkot Medical College is being jointly held at the premises of SIMS till the availability of its own campus. It is functioning in the same premises where previously Allama Iqbal Medical College was started and lately PGMI is located. The attached hospital is Services Hospital, Lahore, which is 1196 bedded teaching hospital having almost all the specialties. The College is affiliated with the University of Health Sciences, Lahore.
At present, the basic medical sciences laboratories and Faculty of PGMI is teaching SIMS students. The hostel facilities have been arranged in PHDC & Postgraduate Nursing Hostel for boys & girls respectively. Professor Dr. Shahnaz Javed Khan has been appointed as Principal, SIMS & Services Hospital, Lahore, recently. 9. SHEIKH ZAYED MEDICAL COLLEGE, RAHIM YAR KHAN
Rahim Yar Khan is one of the modern district headquarter cities in Punjab. Although the city seems a far off place to those living in Lahore Rawalpindi or Islamabad, but the city has very good civic facilities. It is connected with rest of Pakistan by air, rail and road and all types of telecommunication links are available.

The medical college has 640 bedded Sheikh Zayed Hospital having all the tertiary level Health Care Facilities. The College has been established in March 2003 by the order of the Government of the Punjab and is in same administrative ambit as Nishter Medical College Multan, Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore, Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore and King Edward Medical College, Lahore and other Government Medical Colleges.
Sheikh Zayed Hospital is affiliated with the Medical College. This Hospital was established in 1928 as a Civil Hospital in the Municipal Committee building with 50 beds. In 1952 hospital was shifted into the present DHQ building as DHQ Hospital with bed strength of 62. On the up-gradation of hospital the bed strength was increased up to 144 beds in 1974 and 354 beds in 1978.
Sheikh Zayed Hospital Complex consisting of existing facilities and 286 beds was established as Phase-I in 1986 and Phase-II in 1998 with the kind assistance and patronage of His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, the Sultan of Abu Dahbi, a great friend of Pakistan. In 1991 the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan visited the facilities of this institution and recognized medicine and surgery departments for fellowship training program. The Principal of this College is Prof. Eice Muhammad.
