What is Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engines

The terms Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is used to describe the process of modifying content on a given page in order to make it more structured for users and search engines and optimising the website structure for better usability. The best way to think of this is to look at a technical book, for example a book showing how to use Office Excel, or a DIY book. In order for the book to be understandable the author need to write the pages in a native fashion. Allowing the reader to follow the author’s trail of thought and in some cases manually repeat actions from the written word!

SEO is the process (technique, engineering, art) of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website or a web page (e.g. services) from search engines via natural or un-paid or organic search results.

The term “search engine” is often used broadly to describe both crawler-based search engines and human-powered search engines (also known as directories). These two types of search engines collect their listings in completely different ways.

Crawler-Based Search Engines:

These types of search engines, e.g. Google, create their listings automatically. They “crawl” or “spider” the web, then people search through what they have found. And if you change your website or pages on your website they will automatically update their index accordingly.

Human-Powered Search Engines (Directories):

These types of search engines or directories, such as the DMOZ, depend on humans for its listings. You submit a short description to the directory for your entire site, or editors write one for sites they review. A search looks for matches only in the descriptions submitted. Hence this is very limited as you can see you have to add very short description of your full website, as compare to crawler-based search engines where you can have all of you web pages working as a description for them self which give you more presentation on web.

Search Engines need the data structured in a given way to make the most out of what its reading. A common mistake is to think that search engines simply store the content of the webpage and do a find (like Office Words find tool). At the moment there are over 6 billion web pages and doing a basic search would be impossible. Instead search engines need to categorise pages and also score the pages by quality/relevance.

Imagine a book shop where the books are thrown on the floor. You really need to find a book that shows how to replace break pads on your old car. It would take some time and luck to find a book related to the topic in question
