How do you measure SEO success?
In the old days, SEO success was easily measured by ranking reports – this was about the same time that we relied on the horse and cart for transport.
Of course, in 2009, everything has changed. Relying on ranking reports to measure SEO success is now about as useful as relying on Gordon Brown to deliver a decent speech. Ranking reports are fatally flawed because they rely on every user returning exactly the same results.
The introduction of Google’s personalisation option completely turned the world of SEO on its head, as Ben in London may return a different page of results from Sue in Manchester.
So how do you measure SEO success?
In 2009, the best way of measuring SEO performance is, or at least should be, by assessing your organic search engine traffic and quality of traffic. If your traffic levels improve along side your company sale value, your SEO Company deserves a pat on the back. If your traffic levels drop, consider a review and meeting with them.
There are a number of sub-categories within the field of organic traffic levels that can be measured. For example, if your company is geared toward a seasonal trade, you can compare your organic traffic results to the same time last year.
With this in mind, it’s important to have at least a year’s worth of data (preferably with the same analytics provider, as different providers will return different results) so that you can compare year-on-year.
It’s also important to have your SEO analytics set up correctly so that it provides you with the most accurate information to act upon.
If your SEO Company is generating good traffic volumes but only achieving a low page rank, try not to give them a hard time. Remember that the importance of that little number is fading fast.
