GOLDEN RULES FOR GREAT WEBSITE CONTENT
Web Optimised and Conversion Optimised Content Writing Techniques:
One of the most common mistakes is that a considerable amount of time is spent on optimising the website with the aim of increasing traffic that the writer forgets the real aim of their website – the purpose is to convert visitors into customers. Once a visitor selects your webpage, that page must do all it can to persuade them to perform an action. An action can be anything from a newsletter subscription to buying a product, etc. If you fail to convince them to take action, you have failed in your task to secure a new customer. Your website must be both search engine friendly and customer friendly to achieve its optimal objective.
HOW TO WRITE GOOD COPY FOR YOUR WEBSITE:
I am going to discuss with you some of the golden rules which will explain how to obtain the best possible results.
FIRST RULE – AIDA (Attention Interest Desire Action) PRINCIPLE:
Attention: The first thing your page has to do is attract the attention of the visitor. A good bold heading on your webpage is ideal for attracting their attention. Feel free to include target keywords (keywords relating to that page not for your website) in the heading. This will increase the prospect of optimising your webpage.
Interest: Once you have succeeded in attracting their attention, the first paragraph needs to create their interest. Explain the most important points about your product, and encourage them to read the rest of the page.
Desire: Once you have succeeded in attracting their interest, you need to create a desire for your product or service. To do this successfully, you need to mention the benefits of your product or service, how it meets their needs, their aspiration, their objective, their ambition etc. Convince your customer to thinking ‘I want that product’.
Action: Make sure that you have a clear action plan on your webpage. Make it very obvious what your next action should be, and make it simple!
SECOND RULE – KEEP IT SIMPLE!
Do not go for long impressive words that demonstrate your command of the English language. Try to use simple conversational language. People have a short attention span, if they struggle to think about your message they will go elsewhere.
THIRD RULE – BENEFITS:
Benefits, benefits, benefits! Highlight the benefits of your product and service.
People want to know what’s in it for them. If you are selling a raincoat, you really do not want to tell them about the latest material, etc – which will not retain their interest. What they want to hear is that it will keep them dry, it is very comfortable to wear and it’s extremely light weight. Those are the real benefits of the raincoat.
FOURTH RULE – USE OF THE WORD – YOU:
It is essential to make your page feel personal. If you use the word ‘You’ often it will reinforce the impression that you are speaking with them and the page is for them.
FIFTH RULE – THINK ABOUT THE LOOK AND FEEL OF YOUR WEBPAGE:
- Use large fonts
- Break up your content with bold headings: people tend to scan down the webpage. If you have an inviting heading this will encourage the reader to want to know more about what you are offering.
- Make use of white space. Too much text is often counter-productive and the customer will loose interest. Plenty of white space, breaking the paragraph thus making the website easily digestible.
- Think about colour. Black text on white background is still the most effective combination. Check out the big players and you will see they are still using black and white.
- Try to write in short paragraphs
- Keep your sentences short, concise and to the point. Write for your reader in a style that will make it easier for them to read.
- Page size: think of your page size
- Use image: make it interesting with images and graph where ever possible
These are some of the golden rules for a successful Website. Good luck!
